Abbey Vale beat Upper Annandale after finally return to action

Abbey Vale are up to second in the South of Scotland League after finally returning to action.

The weather and festive break meant Saturday’s encounter with Upper Annandale was their first game for more than a month.

But that didn’t seem to have an impact as they ran out 2-0 winners in a game that was moved to Dumfries High School due to the bad weather.

Co-manager Allan Clark said: “We have been training – we tried to train right through the holidays and we had some festive fives before Christmas, then played Threave in a friendly last week.

“With no disrespect to Upper Annandale it was comfortable, but we made it hard for ourselves as we didn’t play overly well.

“We were seven bodies down and it would have been easy to say the pitch was waterlogged and call the game off, but we got a few trialists in and got the game played.

“The weather didn’t help and the boys maybe weren’t used to the surface as we never really got going.”

Adam Kirk headed Vale in front from a Phil Middlemiss corner after little more than half an hour on the high school’s 3G pitch.

And they sealed victory in the second half after Sam Hughes scored following good work from Lewis McKenna.

Clark is hoping the weather improves enough for Maryfield Park to be playable for Saturday’s game against Caledonian Braves and avoid another game at the high school.

He said: “Hopefully it’s playable and we can get another three points on the board as our last option is to move games.

“Andy Brolls the chairman was checking it all last week and said it would be touch and go, but it was going to rain Friday and Saturday and that would make it unplayable.

“We had a look about and moved it to the high school so we could get the game on. We’ve a cup final coming up shortly and we really want to get games played.”
