Abandoned Edinburgh shop could become Chinese restaurant as new plans launched

An abandoned former retail store in the centre of Edinburgh could be replaced by a Chinese restaurant.

Dragon Fly have returned with revised plans for 137 Lauriston Place, Tollcross, after having previous proposals refused by the council in 2021.

The former Electron Wheels store has lain abandoned since its closure a number of years ago and has been earmarked as a potential opportunity for a change of class from retail to food and drink.

A decision notice written by the council's planning team in November 2021 after the initial plans were knocked back said: "The proposed change of use would result in a detrimental impact on neighbouring amenity due to odours from the proposed use and therefore, would not comply with LDP Policy Des 5.

"This determination does not carry with it any necessary consent or approval for the proposed development under other statutory enactments."

Despite this, Dragon Fly have returned with revised proposals to transform the site at the busy city centre location, with the view of making it a restaurant. Within the company's previous application, they stated a desire to use ingredients grown locally.

On the planning application Dragon Fly say they will also create employment opportunities locally in Tollcross and will be running classes for locals.

The building on Lauriston Street comprises a five-storey terraced property on a busy thoroughfare and is adjacent to a prominent intersection. The shopfront is set back from the street slightly within a sheltered arcade but the property is not a listed building and is not located within a Conservation Area.
