Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has said he's always excited about adding to their offensive line, and reiterated that he loves Odell Beckham Jr, who remains a free agent.
The Packers lacked options downfield during their 27-22 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, with Randall Cobb carrying the offensive line with 99 receiving yards. Allen Lazard and Mercedes Lewis may have caught in the endzone, but during a poor second half only Cobb was available for Rodgers.
Rodgers was disappointed after the game, telling reporters that although the faces at Green Bay may change, the standards are still the same. And when speaking to The Mirror, he welcomed the idea of Beckham Jr linking up with the Packers when he recovers from injury.
The Packers were the talk of London on Sunday, and the NFL heavyweights geared up for their first even match overseas. Unfortunately for Rodgers and the Packers though, they were beaten by a resurgent Giants side, who once trailed 17-3 during the match.
Rodgers is still adjusting to life without main receiver Davante Adams, and although Romeo Doubs looks like a star for the future, right now they are lacking downfield. Beckham Jr is now a free agent after leaving the LA Rams as a Super Bowl champion, but is nursing a torn ACL.
The Rams are struggling without him, but there's been increasing talk about where the 29-year-old may end up, and Rodgers has teased reporters by appearing to welcome the prospect of Beckham Jr joining the Packers. Rodgers said: "I'm always going to be for adding anybody to our squad who can help us win.
"Whether or not we need an OBJ, who knows. But I like the person, love the player. Just want him to be healthy honestly. He's been through a lot the last few years. That's the most important thing."
Rodgers was asked after their shock defeat to the Giants, with the quarterback seeming frustrated with their performance in the second half. "I liked the play calls, just didn't pay off," Rodgers added.
And his latest comments on Beckham Jr came after he initially heightened speculation in the build-up to their week five clash in London. "Odell and I have been friends for a number of years now," Rodgers said on The Pat McAfee Show.
"And so we keep in contact often. We've talked various times over the years and obviously with a player like that, you're always hoping there's a time when you can figure things out and play together."
Beckham Jr's fitness is the main concern, but he's proved at the Giants, the Cleveland Browns, and the Rams that when he's at his best, there's no stopping him. Rodgers only has one Super Bowl ring, and Beckham Jr scooped up one last season, and they will have a great chance to pick up another if they are brought together.
But with Beckham Jr's current state of fitness, Rodgers has brushed it off for now. "He's not healthy yet, I don't think. I don't really feel like there's a need to comment until he's healthy."
