New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez is an “elite player.”
When appearing on “The Pat McAfee Show,” he spoke about his run-in with the Patriots’ 2023 first-round draft pick at a rehab clinic during the offseason. Rodgers had an eye on Gonzalez with the two playing in the AFC East division.
They didn’t get to face off last season due to both suffering season-ending injuries. However, they went head-to-head on Thursday night, and Gonzalez had a great showing, even though the Jets won the game. He managed to hold star wideout Garrett Wilson to only five catches for 33 yards and a touchdown.
“I think he’s a great kid. He’s super, super talented. He is an elite player,” said Rodgers. “When a guy is going to follow, we call it star coverage. The respect level from me goes up. …I give those guys who do star coverage a lot of credit and a lot of respect. And Christian is one of those guys who enjoys the challenge, enjoys the competition and will go side to side.”

The next meeting between Rodgers and Gonzalez will be on October 27 at Gillette Stadium. We’ll see if the Patriots’ star corner can continue to give Wilson fits in head-to-head matchups.
