Aaron Ramsdale admitted Arsenal won't try Mikel Arteta's 'crazy idea' for Liverpool

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has already made clear Mikel Arteta is unlikely to repeat a pre-match experiment used ahead of their previous trip to Anfield last season.

Liverpool host the Premier League leaders on Sunday afternoon and head into the game as outsiders due to the opposing fortunes of both groups at present. Winless in four matches, the Reds will require a performance of the highest level to come out on top against the Gunners.

Arteta's side have not tasted victory at the home of Liverpool since 2012 and were defeated 4-0 on their last league visit in L4, despite Arsenal trialling a unique method to end their Anfield hoodoo.

Behind-the-scenes footage from the Gunners' All or Nothing Amazon series released last August captured the north London side training with 'You'll Never Walk Alone' playing on a nearby speaker as Arteta attempted to mentally prepare his side for the cauldron of noise awaiting them.

“One of my crazy ideas. Today, they are going to train with You’ll Never Walk Alone in the background. There is a word that we use in Spain for cycling. When a cyclist is going up [a hill] and looks amazing, and in one kilometre he goes (Arteta signals going down a hill fast ) and looks like he’s going to get stuck," said Arteta when explaining his approach.

"There’s a word [we use] it’s pájara. I had this once at Anfield. The game was going well and then suddenly all I could see was red shirts flying around. The game was passing all over me and I could not react. People will say ‘what is he doing’ and I think ‘I cannot do it - physically and emotionally, I cannot cope and everything goes too fast'. I only had this feeling in my career once and it was at Anfield.”

The Arsenal boss would have been hoping for an alternative outcome to the four-goal loss suffered by his side in November 2021, which ended their eight-game unbeaten league run. Liverpool's iconic anthem is not expected to have featured in the Gunners' training in the build-up to their latest Anfield visit, however, as explained by Ramsdale.

Speaking to football.london ahead of Arsenal's Amazon series, the shot-stopper said: “I’ve never experienced the speakers before. I don’t they’ll be coming back out. We could all see what the method was, it’s one of the stadiums which if it gets on top of you it can be too much.”
