Aaron Finch bids farewell to Big Bash League after 13 seasons with Melbourne Renegades

NEW DELHI: Former Australia captain Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from the Big Bash League (BBL) after an illustrious 13-season career with the Melbourne Renegades.

The Renegades paid tribute to the legendary player, hailing him as a club icon and acknowledging his profound impact on the team, the league, and its fans.

Finch, a stalwart of Australian white-ball cricket, confirmed his decision at Marvel Stadium ahead of the Renegades' clash with the Hobart Hurricanes. The 37-year-old cricketer expressed gratitude for his extraordinary journey, emphasizing the special moment of winning the BBL title with the Renegades in BBL|08.

"There've been some real lows but great highs, and I've loved every bit of the journey. No moment can compare to winning the BBL title; that, for me, was very special and something I'll remember. I'm proud to have played at the one club for the entirety of my career," said Finch, reflecting on his BBL career.

Finch served as the Renegades' captain for nine consecutive seasons, leading the team to their maiden BBL title in BBL|08. His commitment and leadership have left an indelible mark on the club, making him the leading run-scorer with 3311* runs and the second-highest run-scorer in the BBL's history.

Melbourne Renegades general manager James Rosengarten praised Finch's exceptional contributions, describing his legacy as synonymous with the club. "Finchy leaves an extraordinary legacy at this club. It's almost impossible to quantify what Finchy has done for the Melbourne Renegades as a club and brand and for the BBL as a competition," said Rosengarten.

Finch's role as a leader extended beyond on-field performances, guiding the Renegades through highs and lows. His impact reached its pinnacle in 2019 when he captained the Renegades to their first BBL title in a memorable final against rivals, the Stars.

Acknowledging Finch's rare feat of spending his entire BBL career at one club, Melbourne Renegades BBL head coach David Saker praised the cricketer's leadership skills. Members and fans will have the opportunity to bid farewell to Finch during the RMIT Melbourne Derby against the Melbourne Stars on January 13 at Marvel Stadium.
