Aaron Cresswell reflects on ‘unbelievable’ West Ham journey as Europa League semi-finals await

Aaron Cresswell has reflected on the journey West Ham have embarked on under David Moyes.

While Sunday’s draw with Burnley was disappointing, following up Thursday night’s stunning win over Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final was always going to be difficult, particularly for a small squad.

Moyes has admitted his side missed a chance to close the gap on Tottenham and Arsenal after their losses over the weekend, although the visit of Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals next week is surely the bigger game.

Overcoming the Bundesliga outfit will not be easy of course but a first-ever European final is within touching distance, a remarkable feat given where the club were upon Moyes’ return in late 2019.

One of the best sides in the Premier League over the last two seasons, Cresswell has played a huge part in the journey too and talked of the rapid-fire improvement to the club’s official website.

“I was there with the boys in Lyon supporting them and it was an incredible, incredible night to be in amongst it all with the lads,” he said.

“We had a few setbacks with my sending-off and Kurt being injured, and the lads who came in were unbelievable.

“What a night for the Club, for the fans who have been with us for years while we were fighting relegation, I’m sure they’ll be delighted to see us in the quarter-finals, knocking Lyon out 3-0 in their ground. It was just unbelievable and now there’s a semi-final to come. Bring it on.

“There have been a lot of games coming thick and fast in the last few weeks. We’ve got a normal week this week – a day off on Monday, so we’ll rest up and return fully focused come Tuesday.”
