The brazen attack occurred around 7.35 am on a busy street bustling with vehicles and devotees heading to the gurdwara. According to the footage, Oberoi had just stepped out of the gurdwara and unlocked his Mahindra Thar parked nearby.
As he settled into the vehicle, a hooded youth casually walked up to the SUV and suddenly opened fire from close range. The CCTV visuals indicate that the attacker waited for Oberoi to sit inside the car, leaving him little chance to escape. Oberoi was reportedly seated on the driver’s seat when the shots were fired.
After firing multiple rounds, the shooter ran towards a scooter emerging from a nearby lane, where another accomplice was waiting, and the duo fled the spot. The entire incident unfolded in less than 10 seconds.
Police said Oberoi sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a private hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. Officials confirmed that at least two assailants were involved in the attack and that several bullets were fired before they escaped.
Investigators are currently examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area and have launched a manhunt to identify the attackers and determine the motive behind the killing.
Lucky Oberoi’s wife, Simarjot Kaur, had contested the municipal corporation elections last year on an AAP ticket. Oberoi was considered close to Rajwinder Thiara, the party’s in-charge for the Jalandhar Cantt constituency.
Oberoi worked as a financier and was also involved in the property business. He was a resident of the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar area of Jalandhar.
Police said further details would be shared as the investigation progresses.
