A lorry fire caused major disruptions on the roads after the A69 was closed in Northumberland for several hours.
Emergency crews attended the scene on the A69 near Heddon-on-the-Wall after a lorry carrying hay bales caught fire just after 8am on Friday. The road was subsequently closed around 9am and finally reopened at around 3.30pm.
The blaze led to major delays between the A6085 Ponteland Road and the B6528, Horsley. A diversion was put in place via the A6085 and B6528 through Throckley and Horsley.
A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service (TWFRS) spokesperson said at the time: "We can confirm that three of our appliances are in attendance at the A69 at Heddon-on-the-Wall after being called to support Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service with their response to a vehicle fire."
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 8.15am today (Friday) we received a report that a lorry carrying hay bales was on fire on the A69 near Heddon-on-the-Wall. Emergency services are at the scene.
"The road has been fully closed as fire crews tackle the blaze and diversions are currently in place. Motorists are advised there will be increased congestion in the area.”
The A69 westbound reopened and traffic returned to normal at approximately 3.30pm. Eastbound lanes reopened at around 2.45pm.
