A689 crash: Person taken to hospital as air ambulance lands at serious collision in Durham

A person has been taken to hospital after a serious crash on the A689 in County Durham which saw an air ambulance land at the scene.

Emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the A689 between Eastgate and Stanhope shortly after 7.30am on Monday morning. Durham Constabulary, the North East Ambulance Service, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service all attended the scene.

The road remains closed while the incident is dealt with. The ambulance service said it dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken by road to the University Hospital of North Durham.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A689 between Eastgate and Stanhope shortly after 7.30am this morning. We dispatched two ambulance crews and a clinical team leader and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken by road to University Hospital of North Durham."

According to the AA Traffic map, the crash was "serious" and involved two vehicles. Accident investigation work is under way from the Rookhope turn-off to the Eastgate Village Hall turn-off (Eastgate). Traffic is coping well but it is affecting traffic between Wolsingham and Alston.

It is not yet clear what the condition of the person is but Durham Constabulary has been approached for more information.
