South Wales Police are investigating a serious crash which required two air ambulances and closed a busy valleys road in both directions for over seven hours. Emergency services responded to the crash on the A468 near Nantgarw at around 1.10pm on Thursday, April 28.
Three rapid-response cars, two emergency ambulances, and two Wales Air Ambulances were sent to the scene. Additional police officers who closed the road were also at the scene.
South Wales Police have now confirmed the accident involved a cyclist and a motorcyclist. Both were taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff with serious injuries. Traffic monitoring systems showed the road reopened just after 8pm.

Where did the crash happen?
The accident occurred between the A470 Nantgarw Interchange and A469 Penrhos roundabout and caused severe delays between Nantgarw and Caerphilly. Bus diversions were also in place following the accident.
There was heavy traffic on the A470 and on roads heading out of Cardiff as a result of the road closure. Traffic monitoring system Inrix reports congestion to Taffs Well. The incident also affected traffic between Nantgarw and Caerphilly.

South Wales Police confirmed that a 17-year-old boy from Caerphilly and a 78-year-old man from Treorchy were conveyed to the University Hospital of Wales having both sustained serious injuries. The crash involved a motorbike and a cyclist.
What was the emergency response?
The Welsh Ambulance Service sent three rapid-response cars, two emergency ambulances and two Wales Air Ambulances to the scene. There was also a heavy police presence. One eyewitness reported seeing two police cars at either end of the roadblock, plus an additional five police vehicles at the scene.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “South Wales Police is investigating a serious road traffic collision which happened shortly after 1.15pm yesterday (Thursday April 28) on the A468, Nantgarw (Nantgarw Hill) opposite the junction of Heol-Y-Dderwen. The collision involved a motorcycle and a bike.
"The motorcyclist, a 17-year-old boy from Caerphilly, and the cyclist, a 78 year-old man from Treorchy, were conveyed to the University Hospital of Wales having both sustained serious injuries. The road was closed for a period of time whilst enquiries were carried out, and we thank the local community and those affected for their patience during this time.
