The A1 near Kingston Park has reopened after police were called to a man found on the wrong side of bridge railings.
Northumbria Police received a report of a concern for the welfare of a man on Etal Lane Bridge, over the A1 north, at Kingston Park just before 6.30am on Wednesday morning.
Police officers found a man on the wrong side of the railings. Traffic was temporarily held until the A1 Northbound carriage was closed at Westerhope and southbound closed at Fawdon, causing delays and traffic of up to two miles during rush hour.
Diversions were put in place while emergency services were on the scene. The police have confirmed that the man was brought to safety a short time later and the road has since reopened.
A force spokesperson said: “Shortly before 6.30am today (Wednesday) Police received a report of concern for the welfare of a man on Etal Lane Bridge, over the A1 north, at Kingston Park. Officers attended the area and found a man on the wrong side of the railings.
“The northbound carriage was closed at Westerhope and southbound closed at Fawdon and traffic diverted while emergency services were in attendance. The male was brought to safety a short time after the road has since reopened.”
