NEW DELHI: Two big upsets in two days. The FIFA World Cup 2022 is turning out to be a tournament of upsets in Qatar. After Argentina were shocked by Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, it was the turn of four-time champions Germany to suffer an upset defeat on Wednesday, losing their opening Group E match to Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium.
Similar to Saudi Arabia's stunning comeback victory, Japan came from a goal down to register a 2-1 victory against the mighty Germans. Germany went to the halftime break with a 1-0 lead via an Ilkay Guendogan penalty in the 33rd minute, but failed to increase the lead in the second half. Whereas Japan threw everything in the last 15 minutes of play with two substitutes Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano scoring for the Asian side in the 75th and 83rd minute respectively.
