A West Texas Town Struggles With Its Driest Days in Hundreds of Years

Capital & Main Reporter Elena Bruess recently visited Candelaria, a small border town in West Texas, where residents are struggling with a sustained megadrought that has brought some of the driest days in hundreds of years to the region.

Ranching has thrived in West Texas for over a century, but it may not be sustainable for much longer as a lack of water and the high cost of cattle production threaten the practice. A 200-mile stretch of the Rio Grande, called the Forgotten Reach, has completely dried up. This is both because of the drought and overuse of water in upstream communities in states like New Mexico and Colorado.
