A Welsh language version of Gogglebox is being made

A Welsh language version of the popular TV show Gogglebox is being made. Welsh language broadcaster S4C has launched a tender for TV production firms to bid to make Gogglebocs Cymru.

The new show, based on the English version of Gogglebox from Channel 4 and Studio Lambert in which members of the public and celebrities comment on the TV shows and films they are watching, will be aired this autumn. S4C said that Gogglebocs Cymru will play an important role in its output with the winning company working with the public service broadcaster, Channel 4 and Studio Lambert.

It said that casting for the show would need to celebrate characters around Wales and Welsh speakers in Wales and the rest of the UK. As part of this process, S4C said it is "open to additional ideas which will extend the reach, especially multi-platform and digitally".

S4C’S chief content officer, Llinos Griffin-Williams, said: “I am thrilled that Channel 4 has, for the first time, made an exception with one of their most valued formats, by agreeing to release exclusivity of Gogglebox in the UK to S4C.

“As two public service broadcasters, with a close and collaborative working relationship, we are delighted to be entrusted with such an important brand.”

The Welsh version of Gogglebox will build on the 40 worldwide format sales of the show for producers Studio Lambert. Gogglebox was the second biggest title on Channel 4 last year averaging 5.4 million viewers, which provided a 24.5% share of the channel’s audience and a 39.2% of those aged 16 to 34.
