I was visiting my grandmother in England when we planned a day in Bath with my best friend who was doing a Ph.D. in Southampton. Both of us being bookworms, we were excited for the Jane Austen Centre. We booked our tickets in advance online, though I looked it up very little so we would be surprised at whatever it contained. The Centre was at 40 Gay Street, at a house Jane had once stayed at herself. The entry had clear signage with a mannequin of a woman in Regency costume standing by the door. A tour guide dressed in regency clothes with a name tag bearing an Austenian character would also come to the door and would interact with us in character.
The tour started in a room with seating and a family tree of the Austens on the wall the seats were facing. The show began and the guide gave us their history grandly. Modulating his accent to that of regency times and having a well written script, he kept us well entertained throughout what could have been a boring list of dates and family history. It was interactive too, for he asked the audience to guess things and kept us laughing.
