A trendy, new 1980s Newcastle pizza restaurant - and a taste of the future

The 1980s saw new restaurants and fast-food outlets opening all over Newcastle - and there were suddenly many more places to grab a bite to eat than there had been in the previous decade with its limited, plain fare.

Those who were around at the time might remember city-centre favourites such as One Eyed Jack's, Joe Rigatonie's, Porky's Rib Diner, The Italian Job, The Godfather, Pizzeria Colombo and a whole lot more. Chain restaurants arrived, such as Pizzaland on Grey Street, while Newcastle's first McDonald's opened in the mid '80s, and Kentucky Fried Chicken - later to be abbreviated as KFC - set up shop at the top corner of the Bigg Market.

And there was this place, another new national chain outlet - the Deep Pan Pizza Co on Northumberland Road, Newcastle, which opened this week 35 years ago, in August, 1987. Sitting on the other side of the road from the City Hall, it would become a popular eating place during the years that followed.
