A new TikTok trend pranking players during an autograph session has emerged, and it’s absolutely fantastic.
Asking players to sign things is nothing new. By all accounts, teams ask their players to do this sort of thing all the time. (Even newborn babies get signed.) But what happens when they ask players to sign something unconventional — like really old or embarrassing photos of themselves? PURE COMEDY. That’s what happens.
It’s unclear who started this trend, but the results have not disappointed. Here’s an example of the Phoenix Mercury social team pulling the prank off on several franchise members. The team starts the beginning of the joke with Diana Taurasi when she thinks she’s casually signing something. Then, when she realizes it’s an old photo of herself that most people haven’t seen (and she probably doesn’t want them to), she hilariously says, “Ah, [expletive],” before walking away.
@phoenixmercury We’re framing each of these above their lockers 🖼️😭 #phoenixmercury #wnba #qotd #playerarrivals
As you can see, the exchanges produced some hilarious reactions, including Brittney Griner, who had FIELD DAY with her picture and her teammates’ photos.
In the best way possible, BG could barely keep it together.
@phoenixmercury BG had the time of her life with these photos 😂 #phoenixmercury #wnba #brittneygriner #playerarrivals
If you think that’s great, there are a bunch of these floating TikTok.
Here’s some more examples, starting with the Los Angeles Chargers and the Indiana Fever.
