Many thanks to Mark Cocker, who has now written 1,000 country diaries (From little acorns … to his 1,000th article for the Guardian country diary, 17 October), and his fellow diarists for their always-interesting contributions, enhanced for me by the distinctive illustrations by Clifford Harper that often appear with them in print.

• I share Jeffrey Ingold’s pain (The hill I will die on: Cinemas have been getting away with lies. Films should begin on time, 17 October). There is a simple solution: show the ads and trailers at the end of the film. Those who wish to see them can stay behind.
