A Texas teen chose to turn down a bed in a homeless shelter after they told him that his dog would not be allowed to come inside. Now, community members are rallying behind him.
Samuel Haymon, 19, had been living in an apartment with his mother, stepfather and brother. He was the only one working. When he lost his job, the family was unable to pay rent and was evicted, as reported by KENS 5.
His mother moved to a homeless shelter in Dallas, while Haymon and his brother went to Haven for Hope in San Antonio. While the brothers were both offered beds, they were told that Haymon's dog Mordex was not allowed inside. So, Haymon chose to sleep outside on a bench with Mordex.
"I took care of him. Only me, no one else. So we grew up together. He's my son." Haymon told KENS 5. "It's hard, you know, sleeping outside getting eaten up by ants, spiders, getting stung by a bee."
Workers at a nearby health clinic shared Haymon and Mordex's story to Facebook to try to help them, which is where Candida Campos with Bee Positive Husky Rescue came in.
"I've had friends and I've been in spots that I've needed help myself, and I had that guardian angel helping me," Campos told KENS 5.
Community members set up a Gofundme for Haymon and Mordex, which has raised more than $6,400 for the duo as of Monday morning.
Campos helped Haymon find a job at Tractor Supply in Floresville, and another person offered to let the pair stay in a camper set up on Campos' land temporarily while Haymon plans to buy an RV.
