A Step-by-Step Guide on How to Achieve the Mob Wife Aesthetic Without an Ounce of Try-Hard

This year is setting up to be the year of the microtrend. With fashion fads constantly coming and going, it can be difficult to know what's hot and what's not. Just a few short months ago, we were all obsessed with quiet luxury. Think trousers, beige and cream undertones and lots of Chanel ballet flats. Fast-forward to January and suddenly minimalist dressing is a thing of the past thanks to the currently-picking-up-steam mob wife trend.

This maximalist approach to dressing focuses on more obvious symbols of wealth and status. Frequently associated with bold glamour, it's basically the complete opposite of the clean girl aesthetic. While The Sopranos-inspired movement has taken over our TikTok feeds as of late, the trend actually dates back to the early 2000s. Inspired by fictional mob wives Carmela Soprano and Adriana La Cerva who both embody the aesthetic not just with their fashion choices, but through their unapologetic and daring attitudes. Many claim that it's more of an aura or a vibe than a fleeting fashion trend.

So how exactly do you achieve the mob wife aesthetic? Well, we'll break down all of the essential pieces needed to master the look. First things first, you need to start with a (faux) fur coat. Remember, the bigger the better. You absolutely can't go wrong with TOTEME's beige creation since it's the physical embodiment of loud luxury. If you're looking for something slightly less in-your-face, Mango makes a gorgeous cropped sheepskin fur-effect jacket for a fraction of the price.

Animal print is also a must when it comes to the overall vibe. Retrofête's vintage cheetah dress is an easy way to incorporate a fierce print into your wardrobe. Gucci's slingback pumps and Jacquemus' Le Bambino Long bag will also do the trick.

As for color scheme, no mob wife look is complete without tons of black and red. Head on over to Reformation for some striking crimson pieces, including a cherry dress and a hot knit top. And yes, while you probably have a million and one black items in your wardrobe, no mob wife would ever pass up L'Agence's wide-leg leather pants, Gianvito Rossi's grommet knee-high boots and Christopher Esber's veiled silk top.
