A bill that would add $833.33 a month for a small group of severely disabled veterans who need help with daily activities passed the House in a 235-179 vote in May and has gone nowhere in the Senate since, held up in committee over a dispute about how to pay for it.
The measure, H.R. 6047, is named the Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act of 2026 and was introduced by Rep. Tom Barrett of Michigan. Its central provision would create a supplemental monthly allowance for veterans already eligible for an aid and attendance allowance under two of the most severe categories in federal disability compensation law.
