Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced the sequel to the hit film A Simple Favor, with the main cast set to return under the direction of Paul Feig, the original film's director. The sequel has been in the works for a couple of years, and now it's full steam ahead with shooting expected to start this spring.
The key players returning for the sequel include stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Joshua Satine, Ian Ho, and Kelly McCormack. Feig will once again be helming the project, with Jessica Sharzer, who penned the first film, back on script duty.
The plot of the sequel will see Stephanie Smothers (Kendrick) and Emily Nelson (Lively) heading to Capri, Italy, for Emily's lavish wedding to a wealthy Italian businessman. The glamorous event is expected to be filled with murder and betrayal, promising more twists and turns than the scenic road from Marina Grande to the Capri town square.
A Simple Favor, based on Darcey Bell's 2017 novel, follows a small-town vlogger named Stephanie as she investigates the disappearance of her enigmatic best friend Emily. The film, marketed in the vein of Gone Girl, surprised audiences with its clever and humorous take on the missing woman mystery thriller genre.
Upon its release in 2018, A Simple Favor garnered critical acclaim and audience praise, earning an impressive 84 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, made on a modest $20 million budget, grossed $53.5 million domestically and $97.6 million worldwide, solidifying its success.
The sequel is set to be streamed in 240 countries, continuing the stylish mommy noir spell cast by the original film. For fans eager to revisit the world of martinis, mystery, and intrigue, A Simple Favor is currently available for free streaming on Tubi and MGM+.
