Federal investigators have asked the seed company at the center of a fifteen-state sprout outbreak to recall the alfalfa seed lot under investigation, and the company has not responded. The FDA disclosed the standoff in an update to its outbreak advisory posted on August 31, 2026, the same notice that confirmed a widening product recall. The agency said the supplier has not sent a recall notice to its downstream customers and has not told the growers who bought the implicated seed lot to pull their own sprouts.
That matters because the seed did not go to only one grower. The FDA said its traceback has identified at least one additional sprout operation that received and used the same alfalfa seed lot from the same supplier. No products from that second grower have been recalled, and the agency has not publicly named either the seed company or the additional grower.
