In an announcement on Tuesday, renowned in-car GPS navigation company TomTom (TMOAF) -) announced that it is developing a Generative AI-powered driving assistant with the assistance of Microsoft (MSFT) -).
Using Microsoft's Azure OpenAI system, the assistant can perform functions and tasks around the car that would typically require drivers to take their hands off the steering wheel and eyes off the road.
"Drivers can converse naturally with their vehicle and ask the AI-powered assistant to navigate to a certain location, find specific stops along their route, and vocally control onboard systems to, for instance, turn up the temperature, open windows, or change radio stations," TomTom said in a statement. "All with a single interaction."
The satellite navigation specialists note that automakers can integrate this new AI assistant into their in-house infotainment systems, which can be helpful to automakers adapt to an ever-changing technological curve.
“With this next generation of AI, we have a unique opportunity to accelerate innovation across the entire automotive sector,” said Microsoft Manufacturing and Mobility Corporate Vice President Dominik Wee. “We’re building on our longstanding collaboration with TomTom and bringing together AI advances across the Microsoft Cloud with TomTom's automotive expertise to provide drivers and carmakers with new AI-powered tools.
AI in cars is already a forefront that some manufacturers have already tried tackling. In June 2023, Mercedes-Benz launched a beta test for a voice assistant software that utilized ChatGPT as part of its MBUX multimedia system.
