Rotavirus vaccination is associated with reduced mortality among children hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis, according to a pooled analysis of case-control studies from a 24-country dataset, with the benefit specific to illness caused by rotavirus.
The analysis, published in The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health by Moran and colleagues (doi: 10.1016/S2352-4642(26)00215-4), draws on the Multi-National Subpopulations Study to Evaluate Rotavirus Vaccines. The authors concluded that rotavirus vaccines "are effective in preventing rotavirus-positive acute gastroenteritis mortality," and that continued work on vaccine delivery could further reduce deaths worldwide.
