A Place in the Sun star Jonnie Irwin had a history lesson as he "went to jail".
Posting to Instagram, the Channel 4 host said that Brits should "hang their heads" as he learnt about a part of history that didn't come up in his school lessons. He had been in Ireland when he decided to pay a last minute visit to a jail.
He shared images showing the hauntingly long corridors, with cold stone walls and bars lined with huge metal cell doors. The property expert wrote: "A couple of hours to kill before our flight so we sent ourselves to gaol."

He added: "Yet another part of history where the British should hang their heads and no surprise this didn’t come up in my history lessons at school. Can’t believe it was so recent. #irishuprising1916 #modernhistory #ireland #dublin."
Jonnie received plenty of praise from his followers for the post as it helped to raise awareness of Irish history. Antoinette said: "Thanks so much Jonnie. Much appreciated."
Louise said: "Well said... Hope you enjoyed your visit..." A third said: "Fair play Jonnie. Kilmainham Jail such a significant part of Irish history."
Kilmainham Gaol is a former prison in Kilmainham, Dublin, Ireland. It is now a museum run by the Office of Public Works, an agency of the Government of Ireland. Many Irish revolutionaries, including the leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising, were imprisoned and executed in the prison by the orders of the UK Government.
