Fourteen years after laser eye surgery, a 40-year-old woman in Taiwan was bitten in the left eye by her pet bird. The bite did more than scratch the surface. It punched a hole all the way through the thin corneal flap created during her LASIK procedure and knocked that flap out of place.
Ophthalmologists at Kaohsiung Medical University Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital say it is the first known case of a LASIK flap perforation and displacement caused by a bird bite. Their case report, published Aug. 28 in the journal Medicine, adds to evidence that a LASIK flap can remain vulnerable to injury long after surgery.
