A mausoleum, vegetable factory, observatory and preserved gasworks are among the wide variety of Lanarkshire buildings which will welcome visitors during Doors Open weekend later this month.
Venues across the county, including some not usually open to the public, will invite residents inside to see behind the scenes during the popular annual event which takes place across Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18.
Organisers say it will allow people to “find out more about some of our fantastic buildings across Lanarkshire” as well as taking part in a range of special activities.
The attractions in North Lanarkshire which will open their doors on the Saturday are Airdrie observatory, Lanarkshire central mosque, Broadwood stadium, Colzium House and North Lanarkshire heritage centre; plus Coatbridge, Cumbernauld and Motherwell fire stations and both Cumbernauld and Motherwell libraries.
Albert Bartlett is conducting pre-booked tours of its Airdrie factory next Sunday, while there will also be special events at Bellshill fire station and Summerlee museum.
Open to visitors throughout the weekend will be North Lanarkshire churches Cairnlea, Gartcosh, Glenboig, Kilsyth Burns and Old parish, St Andrew’s United Free Church and St Mungo’s, as will the Motherwell headquarters of Lanarkshire family history society.
Hamilton Mausoleum, which has a famous 15-second echo, will open to visitors on Saturday – as will David Livingstone’s birthplace, Biggar and Upper Clydesdale museum, and the South Lanarkshire artwork and sculpture garden Little Sparta, located in seven acres of moorland near Dunsyre.
Visitors will be welcomed on Sunday to the 16th-century Biggar Kirk; while open on both days will be East Kilbride fire station, Hamilton Old parish church, Castlebank horticultural centre and Biggar gasworks.
North Lanarkshire doors open co-ordinator Adam Smith, the Cumbernauld East councillor, said: “We have a fantastic range of participating venues [including] some new and some returning favourites.
“[There will be] unique activities to take part in where we can celebrate our local culture and heritage, and I hope as many people as possible take the opportunity to join in with this year’s Doors Open Days celebrations.”
