A new study reveals babies and children are being increasingly exposed to chemicals found in cosmetics

A new study, conducted over 12 months at paediatrics clinics in Ninewells Hospital, Dundee from January 2024 to January 2025 has revealed that babies as young as six months old are being increasingly exposed to an array of adult cosmetics products, including lip gloss, bronzer and nail polish - putting them at risk of serious skin reactions both now and in the future.

Perfume, hair dye and even hair bleach meanwhile, were being applied to toddlers. And temporary tattoos containing paraphenylenediamine, a chemical known to cause skin irradiation and allergic reactions, given to young children. A third of the 64 children assessed as part of the study were discovered to have had adverse reactions to products applied to their skin.
