A melting glacier exposed a body in the Alps in 1991; 5,300 years after his death, scientists turned Ötzi into one of history's most studied humans

In 1991, melting ice in the Alps exposed a body that had been hidden for more than 5,000 years. The discovery was first mistaken for a recent death. Scientists soon realized they were looking at something extraordinary: the naturally preserved remains of a man from the Copper Age.

Known as Ötzi, he lived around 5,300 years ago. His body, clothing and belongings survived in remarkable detail. Researchers found traces of his final meal, tattoos, tools and even evidence of injuries.
