Federal officials will not say whether a 51-year-old man who died within about a day of entering immigration custody received the basic health screening that Department of Homeland Security regulations require within 12 hours of intake.
Lianyong Wei was pronounced dead at roughly 7:30 a.m. local time on Aug. 23 at the Commonwealth Health Care Corporation emergency room in Saipan, in the Northern Mariana Islands. A corrections officer found him unresponsive during morning checks about half an hour earlier. He had been taken into ICE custody the previous day. His cause of death remains under investigation.
