The Pentagon has deployed substantial US military assets to the Middle East this week, including an aircraft carrier group and thousands of troops, amid indications from Donald Trump that he is keeping open the option of strikes on Iran following its crackdown on protests.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mr Trump confirmed the deployment, stating: "We have a massive fleet heading in that direction, and maybe we won’t have to use it," clarifying that the move was "just in case."
