It was one of those incidents that restores your faith in people. A man has described how a stranger paid for his shopping after his card was declined due to a lack of funds at a branch of Lidl.
Jordan Baker, who has been struggling with rising bills during the cost of living crisis, did have another card on him, but couldn't remember the pin. Luckily, "a nice gentleman" in the queue behind him offered to pay for his shopping, Yorkshire Live reports.
And while Jordan tried to decline the offer, the man insisted and the bill was paid. Jordan did manage to get some cash from an ATM at a nearby garage, but when he returned to pay the man back, the Good Samaritan had gone.
Jordan had been at the Lidl in Hayley Hill, Halifax last Thursday (March 31) at around 9pm for his usual shopping trip for some essentials. After getting what he needed and headed over to the till to pay, but his card was declined.
He said: "After scanning my shopping at the checkout, I've of course gone to pay. That's when I tried my own card and I had insufficient funds.
"I also had my friend's card with me, but I forgot the pin. I then went to call my partner to ask him for the pin again, but that's when a nice gentleman behind offered to pay for the shopping for me. I did politely decline, but he was insistent.
"Of which I thanked him very much for his help - I'd like to extend my gratitude to the kind gentleman. I can't say thank you enough for helping me out in such a stressful situation."
Jordan said that he "rushed" over to the nearest garage to withdraw some money from an ATM, but by the time he walked back into the supermarket the kind stranger had gone.
While he was thankful for the stranger's help, Jordan, who says he has autism and can find such situations overwhelming, said the embarrassment has left him "never" wanting to "leave the house again."
Jordan said: "The effects have been hard to be honest. I've sort of given up keeping up with the cost of energy now. I'd rather build up unaffordable debt to have a comfortable, warm home, than be freezing cold because I can't afford to keep the heating on. We're struggling but I'm very appreciative of kind people like that man helping people out."
