Eagles receiver A.J. Brown confirmed Wednesday that the NFL forced him to change his cleats during the team’s game against the Buccaneers on Monday Night Football.
Brown started the game wearing a set of highlighter-yellow cleats with a matching mouthguard. The two-time Pro Bowler registered the first two receptions in Monday’s game before he briefly went missing in action.
When he returned, Brown was wearing black cleats. As of now, it is not clear why officials allowed the Eagles wideout to begin the game wearing custom cleats, but the 26-year-old wasn’t pleased with having to change.

Brown went on to catch nine passes for 131 yards in the Eagles’ 25–11 victory over the Buccaneers.
The NFL mandates that all players in the league must wear white, black or team-colored cleats during an official game. The only time the league allows players to wear customized cleats is for the “My Cause, My Cleats” weekend, which takes place once during the season.
In the past, the league has also required other NFL receivers like Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham and Antonio Brown to change their cleats to meet uniform policy.
