A golden stay

Opened last July, Ascott Thonglor Bangkok strikes the right balance between posh accommodation that makes you want to stay in and a convenient base for you to explore countless surrounding eateries and attractions. The property is just one of more than 900 properties in more than 40 countries operated by The Ascott Limited, owned by Singapore-listed CapitaLand Investment Limited. The more you know.

First Impression

The 451-room hotel and serviced apartments break its accommodation range into eight types to suit all whether you're a short-term visitor or a long-stay family, ranging from 35m² Deluxe Room to 140m² Three-Bedroom Premier.

Deluxe Room.

Their Deluxe Room is definitely of a respectable size for a city hotel while the bathroom is quite sizeable in comparison to the room's total space. Equipped with a bathtub and shower, your bathing ritual doesn't have to be perfunctory anymore especially when the roller blind is up so you can luxuriate in the tub while taking in the city view through the glass window adjacent to the bedroom.

If you need to WFH (h for hotel obviously), there's a desk of proper size and height and your Zoom background can be the city behind you. I stayed on the 38th floor, which is high enough for me to catch a sliver of the Chao Phraya River on the horizon between neighbouring skyscrapers. Even though the Deluxe Room type doesn't come with a private balcony, the city view through my room's tall windows is quite breathtaking.

Three Bedroom Premier.

However, if you want to live larger and enjoy an unfiltered view, opt for one, two or three-bedroom Premier and Executive types. They also make you feel even more at home with a dining area, a kitchen area and appliances, too.

Staying In

Besides countless nearby attractions and eateries, what also can get you out of the room is several on-site facilities with the highlight being the L-shaped long swimming pool equipped with a pool bar and several loungers from where you can take in the view from the 11th floor. A well-equipped fitness centre is also on the same floor and you can get pumped while overlooking many skyscrapers. You can relax or work in the multipurpose residents' lounge and help yourself to complimentary coffee while the little ones can enjoy the children's playroom. Event-wise, there are meeting rooms and facilities on the 12th floor.

The Residents' Lounge.

While you may assume a property of this stature would have several F&B outlets but Ascott only houses Japanese restaurant Kinki, which is named after the funny-looking big-eyed redfish of the same name. By morning, it serves a bountiful breakfast spread with some Japanese highlights such as made-to-order grilled fish, cold soba and DIY miso soup.

By dinnertime, it serves "progressive Japanese" cuisine and you should definitely get a seat at the sushi bar for a front row to the omakase experience. Look up and you'll see that the circle above it is decorated with grids and black and white tokens, an obvious nod to the board game go. The crockery on which the dishes are served is also eye-catching. Think of Japonica rice with sashimi lightly cooked in soothing broth that is served in a bowl in the shape of a sea urchin.

Going Out

While you may expect more on-site outlets and facilities for a property of this stature and location, this may not be so necessary as there are so many nearby venues that can cater to your various vacation/staycation needs. Well, the whole Thong Lo alone could easily take up a whole day to start with and then Ekkamai for another. Moreover, BTS Thong Lor Exit 3 is just a five-minute walk from the hotel should you want to venture further. More info at ascottthonglor.com-bangkok.com.
