A Giant Vinnies Box Is Popping Up In Sydney So You Can Finally Donate Those Old Clothes

Vinnies

Have you got a box of clothes sitting in your closet like Woody and Buzz in Toy Story 3? Just gathering dust, neglected and cold? Odds are you already know you’re never going to wear them again. It’s such a waste to throw them out, and listing every item on Facebook Marketplace is way too tedious. So, what do you do now?

Vinnies is finally giving you the push you need to part with your best pre-loved clothes for good. Even better, you can take comfort in knowing they’ll go to a deserving home.

But what’s this push, you ask? Read on, my friend.

Vinnies is popping up a huge donation box at 255 George Street, Sydney for three days from October 22 until October 24. From 8am until 5pm you can contribute to the big box of goods.

That’s right. Over three days in October, you can pull up with your box of clothes, hand them off to one of Vinnies’ lovely staff, and leave knowing that you not only freed up some space in your wardrobe but also did a good thing.

Vinnies will then sell these loved clothes, and the money made will go directly towards 130 services and programs across New South Wales. These include improved housing accessibility for the homeless, low-income support, assistance for First Nations people with day-to-day essentials, and more.

Can’t make it to the big box on time? That’s alright. Vinnies has over 200 stores across New South Wales, readily available to take any pre-loved goods. So you’re bound to have one near you.

Now, before you throw that box of old clothes into the boot of your car, you should do some quick maintenance on your clothes first. If your clothes have been gathering dust for the better part of a year, it’s good practice to wash them first before donating. It’s also worth checking if the clothes are still in good condition. Much like your average apartment in Sydney, which you pay way too much for, your clothes can also grow mould.

If the item is in poor condition, Vinnies won’t be able to sell it (because who wants to buy a mouldy shirt?) and instead will send it to a textile recycling shop. A good rule to stick to if you’re unsure is to consider whether your item of clothing is good enough to give to a friend. If not, it’s probably not the right item to donate.

So go on, take stock of your wardrobe and head on down to the big box with your best pre-loved items. You’ll thank yourself later.
