A 'Game of Thrones' movie is officially happening — here's everything we know so far

Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington in Game of Thrones.

Westeros, the fantastical, medieval-like world dreamed up by George R.R. Martin for his iconic "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series, is well-trodden territory for television lovers. It has served as the setting for some of TV's biggest shows, from the OG "Game of Thrones" to popular spinoffs "House of the Dragon" and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." And now that sword-swinging universe is getting the big-screen treatment.

Back in October 2024, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Warner Bros. was quietly developing "at least one" movie in Martin's fantasy world. However, details were scant on the early-days project, with no creatives yet attached to the project nor any information about exactly how the cinematic spinoff would expand on the Westeros tales fans already know and love.

However, a year-plus later, we finally have some forward movement and fresh details on the rumored project: According to Page Six Hollywood, screenwriter-playwright Beau Willimon, best-known as the showrunner of the Netflix political thriller "House of Cards" and a writer on the Disney+ sci-fi series "Andor," has already penned a script and submitted an initial draft that was received positively by Warner Bros. executives.

Per the Page Six report, the storyline may center on Aegon I, also known as Aegon the Conqueror and Aegon the Dragon, the first king of the Targaryen dynasty, who united the realm — well, except Dorne and the lands beyond the Wall, obviously — 300 years before the beginning of "Game of Thrones." Given the royal's influence over all other "GoT" stories we've seen so far, it makes sense that a feature film expansion would cover King Aegon I's epic takeover of Westeros.

However, given all of the off-screen mess that's happening over at Warner Bros. as of late, it remains to be seen if this Aegon-focused flick ever makes it out of development purgatory.

In case you missed it, last week, the bombshell news hit that Warner Bros. Discovery has accepted Paramount's merger offer after competitor Netflix walked away from the deal; soon, HBO Max — which is the streaming home to all of the studio's Westeros-based TV adaptations — will soon be merged with Paramount+ into one mega streaming service.

How that industry-shaking merger will affect the Aegon movie as well as other Westeros-based properties ("House of the Dragon" has been renewed through its fourth season, with season three slated to drop sometime this summer, and a "Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is set to return with its second season in 2027) remains to be seen.

Tom's Guide will keep you posted on all Westeros-related developments across screens big and small, including upcoming "Game of Thrones" spin-offs and behind-the-scenes intel on current series like "House of the Dragon" and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."
