A DRIVER has allegedly crashed into a power pole at Williamtown in the early-hours of Wednesday, before walking into McDonald's where he reportedly attempted to order a thick shake, before hearing sirens and fleeing the scene on foot.

Police are investigating the crash on Nelson Bay Road that occurred just before 4.30am on August 28.

The car took out a power pole, before it burst into flames. The damage has caused chaos on Wednesday morning with road closures in place and long traffic queues.

Firefighters responded to the incident near Lavis Lane and Cabbage Tree Road where they found a small hatchback well alight in grass by the side of the road near the Williamtown McDonald's.

Ausgrid crews remained at the scene at 9am and were expected to spend the day replacing the power pole. At least 10 properties were left without power after the incident.

Motorists have been urged to allow extra travel time and expect delays - Nelson Bay Road was closed in a southbound direction.

Vehicles heading towards Newcastle from Port Stephens have been diverted along Cabbage Tree Road, Tomago Road, and the Pacific Highway through Hexham before being directed onto Maitland Road to go back towards the city.
