Confirmation that the world has gone mad: I got into my car, a Smart #1, on Saturday, and before it did anything else, the car said “Love is in the air” and wished me a happy Valentine’s Day. As a matter of principle, I refused to speak to it for the rest of the day.

I feel much better now that I have gone back to saying it whenever I feel grateful for something someone has done.

• More bedtime stories (Letters, 13 February) brought to mind our holiday in Oban, Scotland. When we entered our hotel room, there appeared to be a pregnant lady in our beds. On closer examination, it turned out to be a large wire cage with an infrared lightbulb in the centre that could be turned on to preheat the bed. There was also a sign forbidding sleeping with the device.
