A male Barbary macaque named Jomanix did something researchers had not seen in more than 30 years of studying his population: he clapped his hands at other monkeys. Scientists recorded 30 claps between 2022 and 2024, and 25 came packaged with other hostile signals such as lunges, stares, and open-mouth threats. Their report, published in the journal Ethology in 2025, suggests the clap works as a threat, and that the dominant male may have borrowed it from the humans who work in his park.
