Facing a grim prognosis after a gallbladder cancer diagnosis, Ewa Lutka-Krawczyk's primary concern was not for herself, but for Gaja, the shelter dog she adopted three years ago. She asked her doctor to assure her she would live a few more years, ensuring the deeply attached Gaja "wouldn't be left behind."
However, with a bleak outlook, the 70-year-old was admitted to a Warsaw hospital's palliative ward this month. Back home with Lutka-Krawczyk's husband, Gaja was barely eating. "She is waiting for me," Lutka-Krawczyk said from her bed, a draining tube attached to her abdomen.
