Marks and Spencer is celebrating Halloween with a brand new variety of its popular Colin The Caterpillar cake. The confectionary critter takes on a ghostly white form in the new cake.
That's because the regular Colin cake has been covered in a layer of white chocolate for the special edition. And fans of milk chocolate don't need to worry: the white chocolate is on top of, not instead of, the usual milk chocolate layer.
The white chocolate is wrapped around the caterpillar in the style of a mummy's bandages - perfect for Halloween. M&S revealed the new cake in a post on Instagram.
The post read: "Our limited-edition, double choc yummy mummy Colin the Caterpillar is here! He’s coated in a layer of Colin’s classic milk chocolate AND a layer of creamy white chocolate – WOW."
The cake appeared to be an immediate hit with the store's Instagram followers. One wrote: "Never mind the decorations, we're getting one of these!"
Another said: "And I thought original Colin was already the zenith of caterpillar cakes." And a third added: "Colin is the perishable version of Madonna, always reinventing himself, love your work Col."
The original Colin the Caterpillar cake is a chocolate sponge roll filled with chocolate buttercream and coated in chocolate. It has spawned a number of spin-off products, as well as similar cakes available from other supermarkets.
Other Colin-themed Halloween specials available at M&S include risky roulette sweets, which are a mixture of sweet and sour, and a "creepy melting milk chocolate stirrer". This miniature Colin on a stick has a green head and red eyes, and can be stirred into milk to make hot chocolate.
