A 69-year-old man had increasingly painful swallowing on one side and a sore neck. Imaging revealed the cause: a thin spike of bone that hangs from the base of the skull had grown to about 9 centimeters on his left side and worn into the hyoid bone in his throat.
Doctors at the University of Kentucky described the case in Ear, Nose & Throat Journal, in a report published online Sept. 8. They called it "an extraordinary variant of Eagle syndrome," with bone growth "significantly exceeding typical descriptions in the literature."
