A$AP Rocky has given insight into his approach to fatherhood and he says he hopes he and girlfriend Rihanna will be ‘cool parents’, not regular parents.
The 33-year-old musician – real name Rakim Mayers – welcomed a son with 34-year-old chart topping sensation Rihanna earlier this month.
It is the first child for the couple who have been dating since 2020 and, following reports they had a rave as a baby shower, it’s perhaps not unexpected that the duo hope to be regarded as ‘cool’ parents.
Channelling his inner June George from Mean Girls, A$AP explained why he thinks his son will be able to look up to him and Rihanna in awe.
He told Dazed and Confused magazine: "I will always remind my children to never lose their imagination, even as adults, no matter what.
“I actually love to watch cartoons - I've watched like, Teletubbies, Blue's Clues, Yo Gabba Gabba, Peppa Pig and Baby Shark.
“I hope to raise open-minded children. Not people who discriminate. And I'm not trying to describe a saint, but realistically, I just want a cool child with cool parents."
He went on to explain that he and Rihanna are set to raise their son to be as outward looking as possible.
He said: “Things like diversity and versatility are important, and they'll be embedded in the household.”
News broke earlier this month that A$AP and Rihanna had welcomed their son, with TMZ reporting: “sources with direct knowledge tell us he was born on May 13 in Los Angeles.”
The couple are yet to reveal the name of their bundle of joy – while other reports have suggested they plan to move to Barbados to raise him.
A source told the Sunday Mirror a week after the boy arrived: “Rihanna loves Barbados and she loved growing up there.
“She wants to give her baby the same experience she had – away from the world of showbusiness.
“Both her and ASAP’s family are in Barbados, so the couple are planning to move there in a few months’ time.”
And it is also understood she has already decided which school the tot will go to when he’s old enough.
While Rihanna was born and raised on the Caribbean island, A$AP also has heritage on Barabados – and he is finally being able to connect with the island thanks to his romance with the singer.
He told Dazed: “It was honestly so unbelievable. I had family there that only came up [to New York] once every five years, family I only spoke to over the phone my whole life.
“You remember those one-dollar, five-dollar phone cards? I was raised to know about my heritage, but I was missing the actual experience. I didn’t get to experience it until I was an adult. It was one of the most surreal experiences I’ve encountered in my lifetime.”
