A $2,071 Social Security Check Sounds Livable — Until These 6 Bills Come Out First

A monthly Social Security check of $2,071 may sound workable, particularly for someone entering retirement with a paid-off car, a modest lifestyle, and few debts. That figure is significant because the Social Security Administration estimates the average Social Security check for retired workers at $2,071 per month in 2026. But $2,071 isn’t necessarily the amount available for groceries, hobbies, travel, gifts, and everything else retirees imagine doing with their monthly income. And $2,071 is only an average. SSA data show substantial variation among retirees; for example, retired women averaged about $1,872 per month at the end of 2025, while retired men averaged about $2,282.

On top of that, Medicare premiums may be deducted before the payment even reaches your bank account, while housing, utilities, food, transportation, and other healthcare costs can quickly claim much of what’s left. Here’s what an average Social Security check can look like once six unavoidable or common bills enter the picture.
