A $100 bill can still put a meaningful amount of food in your grocery cart—but shoppers have considerably less room for impulse purchases, premium meat, convenience foods, and name brands than they might remember.
The latest USDA Food Price Outlook shows grocery prices were 2.2% higher in August 2026 than a year earlier, and USDA forecasts food-at-home prices to increase approximately 2.4% for 2026 overall. That comes after years of cumulative grocery inflation that already pushed the cost of many familiar staples considerably higher.
