BENGALURU: Not all cases filed by the police department end up in convictions. Recently, the Karnataka high court observed that it's the quality - and not the quantity - of evidence that matters under the Indian Evidence Act and acquitted a man charged with attacking a policeman in plainclothes.
Taking note of poor prosecution leading to acquittals and dismissal of cases, the police department has taken action against 935 personnel in the past three years for lapses including non-submission of evidence, settlements and allowing witnesses to turn hostile. These cops have been warned, censured and denied promotion or increment, depending on the gravity of the lapses.
