93-year-old widow Ruth Gottesman gave $1 billion to make medical school free: Why her gift changed Albert Einstein College of Medicine forever

At 93, Ruth Gottesman, a widow and longtime Albert Einstein College of Medicine professor, made a $1 billion donation in 2024 that did something extraordinary: it eliminated tuition for students at the Bronx medical school.

The size of the gift alone was enough to make headlines. But what made Gottesman’s donation truly remarkable was how directly students benefited from it. Through the Gottesman Scholarship Fund, current and future students can attend Einstein without paying tuition, with certain additional fees also covered.
