Fall has a funny way of sneaking expenses onto the calendar. One week brings school fees and new shoes, the next brings Halloween costumes, cooler-weather clothes and a weekend trip, and suddenly the holiday season is waiting around the corner with its hand out. That pileup can make a normal autumn feel like a financial obstacle course, but cutting costs does not require turning the season into three months of saying no.
There is a better approach: spend deliberately on the things that make fall enjoyable and get ruthless about the expenses that add little value. NerdWallet’s 2026 back-to-school survey found that 25% of back-to-school shoppers planned to spend less because of higher living costs, while Deloitte found that parents planned to spend about $557 per K-12 student. Those numbers show why a little planning can matter, but the goal isn’t simply to spend less. The goal is to make sure the money going out actually earns its place.
